AFX Promotes Business of Fashion
Get ready to be part of a remarkable journey that will lead you to one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most glamourous red-carpet event from September 27-29, 2018, the 2018 Africa Fashion Exchange (AFX), hosted by the KZN Fashion Council (KZNFC), to be held in Durban.
The crème da la crème of fashion and high- end designers from KZN, other parts of South Africa, and neighbouring African countries are expected to descend on the Province.
The KZNFC will create an arena that is conducive for business-to-business meetings, networking opportunities and linkages with retailers and buyers to boost business in fashion and textile industries. The three-day show will be underpinned under the theme, “Africa By Design” which will be incorporated throughout the three-day event in the various platforms. KZNFC promotes the AFX which is key to the survival of the fashion industry in the province, the country and the continent. It is envisaged that it will begin to address the most inherent challenges of the industry – the lack of the necessary sustained exposure and suitable platforms from which South African and African designers can market their products, exchange business ideas and set the agenda for the fashion sector in sub-Saharan Africa.
The AFX will incorporate a variety of activities that will provide its participants with an experience like no other. This includes: knowledge sharing sessions with renowned guest speakers, prestigious fashion shows, exhibitions, film screenings and back to back business meetings with buyers and designers.
MESSAGE FROM DR JOY NDLOVU,
It is an honour to be involved in this exciting industry - to work with talented designers and crafters, and to be associated with my colleagues at the KZN Fashion Council. To those who earn a living from fashion, being fashion-conscious should mean being proudly local and supporting the local industry to keep it thriving. This AFX, which is the KZNFC’s flagship event, offers them a unique platform to showcase their work. At AFX 2018, you will get to see the fashions of emerging, emerged and established designers as well as that of talented students and international designers. Enjoy AFX 2018 and good luck.
Message from Nisha Thavar, Managing Director, KZNFC
This year’s Africa Fashion Exchange will take over the city bringing the spirit of African fashion and creativity to the world. We will host more than 1 000 fashion entrepreneurs, designers, crafters, manufacturers, fabric suppliers and students as well as business development departments at municipal, provincial and national level, while guests will include buyers, retailers, celebrities, social media influencers and the media. AFX is a critical intervention to address the challenges facing designers and to ensure that fashion and its related industries in South Africa thrive. AFX will open doors for designers giving them the chance to grow their businesses, with the prospect of gaining access to national and international markets.
Message from Project Leader for the AFX, Xolani Zulu
THE interest in this year’s Africa Fashion Exchange has been huge, which is heartening as it demonstrates the real need for such an event. The interest has come from across the province. We have done our best to incorporate all categories of fashion designers and crafters. One of the features which sets AFX apart is our focus on knowledge sharing, which will enable audiences to learn from key thought-leaders in the industry. Our theme is “Africa By Design, and we are saying that as much as Africa can trade with itself, it also has a lot to offer the world. We trust you have a great experience at AFX.
Message Masana Chikeka, Program Manager of DAC
The national Department of Arts and Culture is proud to be part of this year’s Africa Fashion Exchange. It is important that the people in the fashion and related industries-particularly the emerging ones-are supported and promoted. New entrants and established ones can always benefit from guidance and new opportunities so that they can reach their full potential. The many knowledge-sharing sessions with industry thought leaders that AFX is staging will certainly prove beneficial. The event will open doors and give designers and crafters opportunities to forge new relationships boosting their businesses, promoting their brands and giving them access to new clients.
Message from Fikiswa Pupuma, Chief Director of EDTEA
This year’s Africa Fashion Exchange is going to be one of the most important that we have held. This year, will see the focus shift to the youth as this is where our future lies. The programme has been specifically designed to include young people and, for the first time, a secondary school programme has been included in the agenda. Our youth are our future, making strides in technology, and proving that Africa is leading with the fourth Industrial Revolution. We will nurture talent and skills and stop looking at overseas. And are constantly looking at creating trade opportunities on our continent. The AFX is the home for our youth and our talent and EDTEA will continue to support it.
